For months, Big Oil has been going all out to attack the federal government's plan to curb their polluting emissions. Industry CEOs have assaulted the plans to try to keep emissions down as “too ambitious.”¹ They’ve bankrolled grassroots groups to run ads to try to convince the public to get on their side.²

The Liberal government is working on finalizing the emissions cap policy now, to be announced in early 2023. Their decisions right now will determine whether we have a real shot of hitting our climate goals, or we bow to the interests of big oil and continue the status quo. The difference? Us.

Dear Honorable Ministers,

I am writing to you as someone who is deeply concerned we are not acting fast enough to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. You sit in the Liberal Cabinet — and are in a key position to help develop a transformative emissions cap policy.

To meet our climate goals,  we need the emissions cap policy your government is working on to be ambitious and effective.

An emissions cap policy hasn't been attempted anywhere in the world — this is an opportunity for your government to establish itself as a real climate leader and lay down a legacy for generations to come.

This policy should involve:
 
1. Reducing emissions immediately: the oil and gas industry must reduce emissions significantly by 2025 and reduce its emissions by 60% by 2030. 
2. Ensuring tools of compliance, enforceability and accountability are implemented immediately with the cap.  
3. Including all emissions from the production and use of oil and gas. 
4. Resisting efforts from the oil and gas industry to weaken the cap.
5. The cap should not undermine Canada’s commitment to phasing out fossil fuel subsidies.  
6. Finally, Canada needs a Just Transition strategy that leaves no one behind by rapidly winding down fossil fuels building strong, sustainable communities for everyone, creating millions of decent, low-carbon jobs and respecting Indigenous rights and sovereignty.

It has never been more critical to take bold climate action. I look forward to hearing your response.
