Right now, the BC government is deciding whether to allow the $9-billion Site C megadam to go forward. This disastrous project would:

Flood precious farmland that could feed a million people
Destroy fragile habitat for grizzlies, wolves and endangered caribou
Cost taxpayers more than $9.2 billion when our schools and hospitals are struggling
Increase your hydro bill by as much as 40%
Cost more than sustainable alternatives like solar, wind or geothermal

Big oil is pressuring the government to build the dam to provide cut-rate electricity to power fracking fields and the tar sands -- but if enough of us speak out we can convince the government to stand up for BC ratepayers and scrap the dam.

Dear Ministers,

I am writing to urge you to cancel the Site C dam. It’s a costly and environmentally-desctructive project that is out of step with the vision your party campaigned on in the May election.

BC residents simply can’t afford the hydro rate increases that Site C would bring. The project would add $9 billion (and likely much more) to BC Hydro’s already large debt, which will be paid for by British Columbians. And since BC doesn’t even need the power, it would have to be sold at a loss, costing British Columbians even more.

Your government campaigned on a promise to make life more affordable. Cancelling the costly and unnecessary Site C project is a concrete step to make good on that promise.

Furthermore, Site C tramples on the rights of Treaty 8 First Nations, who have the right to use the Peace River Valley for hunting, fishing and cultural purposes, and have expressed clear opposition to the dam.

Allowing the Site C project to continue would be inconsistent with your government’s commitment to adopting the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

As if that’s not bad enough, the dam is an environmental disaster. It would cause significant irreparable harm to fish and wildlife in the Peace Valley, and flood some of the best farmland in the province.

Stopping Site C would demonstrate your government is serious about defending the environment that sustains us.

British Columbians elected your government to bring a new kind of leadership to our province -- leadership that puts the interests of regular BC residents ahead of big-money donors and special interests. Christy Clark’s wealthy donors want Site C, but regular people across the province are opposed.

Please stand up for First Nations, BC ratepayers, and our precious environment by cancelling Site C as soon as possible.
