It’s an important step to affirm the longstanding ban on north coast oil tanker traffic in Indigenous laws and to protect the coastal Great Bear Rainforest -- home of endangered species like orcas and white Spirit Bears -- from oil spills. I am writing to urge you to support the passing of Bill C-48, the Oil Tanker Moratorium Act, with no amendments. Bill C-48 has already passed three votes in the House of Commons -- and the current government was elected with a mandate to pass Bill C-48 into law.

This bill will formalize a voluntary ban on crude oil tanker traffic that has been in place for decades, providing crucial protections to the North Coast of British Columbia. Indigenous leaders and local communities have fought to protect this important region, home to rare and endangered species and plants, for many years.

Proposed amendments to the bill -- including the creation of a corridor to allow the passage of oil tankers through the ban region, and the condition that the ban is temporary -- would substantially weaken the legislation, with significant consequences for the local ecosystem and the communities that live there.

I respectfully request that you support the passage of Bill C-48 without any amendments.
