Ban single-use plastics
11,604 actions
goal: 16,000
Right now, Canadians are throwing away a whopping 3 million tonnes of plastic garbage every single year. [1]
Turtles are choking on plastic bags, microplastics are seeping into our seafood and drinking water, and if we don’t do something to cut down our plastic garbage, by 2050 there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish! [2-5]
A common-sense way to cut down our plastic waste would be to ban single-use plastics -- things like plastic bags, straws, cups and bottles that we use for a few minutes and then throw in the garbage. These items never decompose, and wind up in our oceans killing over 100,000 marine animals every year. [6]
We need to ban single-use plastics, and make sure that viable biodegradable alternatives to single-use plastics are made available to those who rely on them.
Sign the petition now, and call on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Environment Minister Catherine McKenna to protect our oceans and ban single-use plastics.

Dear Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna
