I'm writing to you today to urge Canadian Blood Services to immediately cease supply contract negotiations with Grifols and keep Canada's plasma collection public and unpaid. CBS receives one billion dollars a year from public Canadian funds. As our nation's largest publicly funded charity, it is your duty to be transparent.

CBS is claiming that plasma supply in Canada is "dwindling". The supply chain exists within the veins of Canadian donors, which are accessible to CBS if CBS opens more collection clinics and hires more staff. There is no justification for selling the market share of donors to commercial companies.

Last time privatization was introduced to blood collection services, over 8000 Canadians died as result of the reckless pursuit of profit — this cannot happen again. We can't allow a commercial company to set up shop in economically disadvantaged neighbourhoods and exploit the human resources of poor people in order to make a profit.

Plasma collection needs to stay public, and unpaid. As a federal charity that receives public funds, any closed door dealings are a violation of the public’s trust. I urge you to do the right thing and call off the deal with Grifols and keep profit out of plasma collection.
