Update (September): The federal government is getting ready to make a decision on this project as early as mid September and as late as early October. Update (June): Thanks to the hard work of thousands of you and the amazing organizing of the people of Northern BC, the government has delayed this decision again until September. Petronas has failed to submit evidence that its project is safe for salmon and the environment. In the meantime, it’s important that the government continues to hear our opposition to this project. Update (March): The government’s decision on whether to allow Petronas to build a huge LNG plant in BC has been delayed! Malaysian oil giant, Petronas, wants to build a huge liquefied fracked gas plant right on top of fragile eelgrass beds that provide habitat for 330 million juvenile salmon every year. ¹

The project threatens the Skeena River’s $100 million wild salmon economy, which forms the backbone of entire First Nations cultures. ²

The Hereditary chiefs, First Nations leaders and communities cross the Skeena region and the province are against the project. ³ Now, the Government needs to hear that people across Canada are opposed to this project.

The Petronas LNG project isn’t just bad for salmon. This project is:

1. Bad for the climate: The Petronas LNG project is so big, it would single-handedly increase BC’s carbon emissions by as much as 8.5%, making it one of Canada’s single largest point source of GHG emissions. ⁴
2. Bad for the economy: Petronas admitted they plan to outsource 40% of construction jobs to foreign temporary workers and create as few as 200-300 long-term jobs. What’s worse, the BC government created huge loopholes that would let Petronas off the hook for millions in taxes and royalties ^5  6
3. Prime Minister Trudeau promised his government wouldn’t force projects through communities without consent. Scientists, local residents and First Nations are already speaking out against Petronas. ⁹ If thousands of us add our voices, the Liberals will have no choice but to reject this project.

This isn’t the first time people in BC have united to defend wild salmon from big oil. Community opposition scuttled Shell’s plans to frack in the Skeena headwaters, and years of organizing by communities across BC killed the Enbridge pipeline.

We can protect BC’s precious wild salmon economy once again, but only if we act now.

Send a message to Prime Minister Trudeau to ask him to stand up with BC, protect the wild salmon and keep his Paris Climate commitments by rejecting Petronas’ liquefied fracked gas project.
