Ripping screaming children from their mother’s arms. Locking babies in cages. And now, plans for the immediate mass deportation of people fleeing violence, back to their home countries.

Given the nightmare of Trump’s America, pressure is mounting on the Trudeau government to scrap the Safe Third Country Agreement—an outdated pact between Canada and the US that denies asylum seekers protection in Canada if they try to come via an official land border crossing with the US, since the agreement assumes the US is a safe place for refugees.

But America is not a safe place for refugees.

We need to take this pressure to the next level, and flood the inboxes of PM Trudeau and Immigration & Refugee Minister Ahmed Hussen with widespread calls to end this cruel agreement, to let them in, and let them stay.

Dear Minister Hussen and Prime Minister Trudeau,

I’m calling on you to scrap the Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA) with the US.

The entire basis of the STCA is that America is a safe place for people seeking asylum, and meets its obligations under international human rights law.

When the crisis began, you said you were going to “assess” the human rights situation facing asylum seekers in the US before deciding whether or not to take any action. Now we know full-well what’s happening south of the border: unlawful criminal prosecutions, forcible detention, family separation, kids still kept in cages — and now the threat of indefinite detention and mass and immediate deportation without any due process.

Canada needs to step up. Scrap the STCA, and the Designated Country of Origin list and end Canada’s restrictive quota systems that limits the number of asylum seekers Canada offers protection to.

The United States isn’t safe, and everyone arriving from the US must get full protection and permanent resident status.

Let them in. Let them Stay.
