The Toronto District Catholic School Board tried to intentionally exclude province-mandated protections for kids around gender identity and expression. [1]

As a result, kids that are bullied for expressing themselves a certain way or having same-sex parents will have nowhere to turn for protection — and their bullies will get off scot-free.

The thing is this decision isn’t final. There’s another vote on December 5 and sources are saying it could go either way — a groundswell of people power right now could tip the vote in our favour.

If we can ramp up the pressure before the next vote, by sending thousands of emails to school board trustees calling on them to protect all kids regardless of differences — we may be able to convince them to update their code of conduct, or risk huge reputational damage.

Dear Toronto District Catholic School Board Trustees,

I’m calling on you to add the terms gender identity, gender expression, marital status and family status to a list of prohibited grounds for discrimination to your updated code of conduct.

Not only is it required by both the Education Act and the Ontario Human Rights Code -- it’s also undeniably the right thing to do. Every child deserves to feel safe, protected and loved regardless of differences.

Trans* kids -- who are already incredibly vulnerable -- will have nowhere to turn for protection and their bullies will walk free, without consequences. With a staggering rate of suicide among trans* kids already, this is too great a risk.

The Education Act requires all district school boards to provide safe, inclusive, and accepting learning environments for all children and by not adhering to these standards.

I, as well as countless others, are prepared to stand up for the kids who will be impacted most. As a part of the largest Catholic school board in the country, I hope you are too. Please do the right thing.

*Trans is an umbrella term for persons whose gender identity, gender expression or behaviour does not conform to that typically associated with the sex to which they were assigned at birth.
