A massive coal mining project on Tent Mountain could move ahead as early as next month.¹

The Tent Mountain coal project could contaminate the drinking water that thousands of Albertans and animals rely on, seriously degrade our natural biodiversity, and cause irreparable damage to the Rocky Mountains that dot our horizon.² The Tent Mountain coal project is one of several coal projects being proposed for the Crowsnest pass area.

The Kainai and Siksika Nation have recently submitted requests to the Federal Minister of Environment to have the Tent Mountain Mine designated for a federal impact assessment.³

So here's where you come in. A flood of messages from tens of thousands of us in support of the Kainai and Siksika Nation's demands for a thorough and robust environmental impact assessment could convince the federal Minister of Environment to press pause on the project until an assessment is completed. It could delay the project for months — if not years — and make it a financial risk not worth undertaking.

Dear Minister Wilkinson,

I'm writing to you today to urge you to designate the Tent Mountain coal project, proposed by Montem Resources, for a thorough and robust federal impact assessment under section 9(1) of the Impact Assessment Act.

The project would have consequences for the ecological integrity of the area and it would hinder the ability of the Kainai and Siksika Nation to practise their Treaty Rights. On top of that, it poses significant risks to the Oldman River Basin as well as fish habitat, migratory birds, and endangered species in the area. The water supply and security of thousands of Albertans is at stake.

Coal mining in this area was stopped in the 1980s. Now, in the midst of a climate crisis, it is irresponsible to trample on Indigenous rights and re-open this area for mining.

I've also CC'ed the Impact Assessment Agency's Prairie office in this email. I urge you to roll out an environmental impact assessment to protect our water systems and uphold the rights of Indigenous people.
